A Message from the Founder:
#Trivia and its features are not the brainchild of solely one individual. The fun, entertaining, and competitive environment is the work of a community. It is the talent, spirit, and support of every single user that makes #Trivia as popular and as enjoyable as it is.
Thank you for all that you are and all that you do. The success of this channel has brought me so much joy and happiness.
Love always,
MurphysLaw (Eric)
Our Story
MurphysLaw created #Trivia on September 28, 2023. Early on, we were barely functional, relying on a single (shoddy) script with a limited and minimally interesting (and inaccurate) question set that was (at least) 15-20 years old. Months passed, and it was decided that we needed a better question bank. Theorem and MurphysLaw spent many an hour trying to properly format (for our purposes) an established Jeopardy! question bank and a makeshift set was developed.
We soon realized that the old Tat's Trivia script wasn't going to be very reliable, so kittenhat kindly hosted a TCL trivia script for Eggdrop (BogusTrivia) exclusively for #Trivia. This made gameplay much better. Not only could we play with our newly developed Jeopardy question set, but also "Kaos" rounds that offered a host of points for several different correct answers. Over time, Corgi re-edited our work and developed a much more succinct and visually pleasing version of our Jeopardy! question bank.
With that, new users started popping up on our channel much more frequently until we hit, at a peak, 92 users (during a "Community-building event" promoting the IRC server sponsored by Inclination and Windows98) in the channel. What was a meager average user base of a loyal 20-30 became a user base of a loyal 70-85 (although many are idle-- and that's okay). We went from hosting one game every night possible, to hosting several games almost every day, (at various times).
Over time, we had so many ideas we wanted to see come to fruition. We wanted to edit questions more easily and as a group. We wanted players to be able to submit ideas on how to improve gameplay and submit their own questions directly. We wanted to be able to switch to different question sets so that we weren't tied down to only questions that appeared on Jeopardy. None of this was possible, however, with an unmodified script. rb14060 volunteered to spearhead the development of a modified script, which launched for normal use (in beta) on May 8, 2025. This was followed by the creation of a Git for collaborative question editing and continuous feature implementation among the channel staff.
We are so excited to see what new and improved features we can offer in the future!
